These quotes and statistics neede to be sent to every politician in our government (especially in the state of Florida where the ridiculous FCAT rules!), and our parents and teachers need to be educated about the importance of music and the arts. I have a Bachelors in Music and two Masters (one in acting and the other in education), I teach music and art to preschool students who are in the Title 1 program in Escambia County of Florida. Both of my own children are in public schools (4th grade and 6th grade), doing extremely well, and at home with them I put no more emphasis on the FCAT than I do on which toilet paper we use. They both take music and as much art as I can provide as a single mom with only one income. They also play organized sports as much as possible (they like soccer and basketball) and participate in their church youth groups (of which choir is a big part). Music always made the biggest impact on my life (both academic and otherwise), and I know it has helped to make them successful as well. They both scored very high on the FCAT, but that's only because they are educated as "whole people". We have got to stop educating our children in what I call "streams" or "tunnels". Think of "whole people" as circles or pies, and we must educate the entire pie. Academics, the Arts, Sports, and Spirituality are all ingredients of the pie and it is impossible to make a complete pie without all of the required ingredients! We have come to a place in our nation where we educate or children in "tunnels" ... here's math over here, oh, and there's art over there...Now we're going to stop doing reading and go to music class...! It's all RELATED! It's all part of the same pie! You don't stop math and reading because you are going to music class! You continue math and reading in music class, and in all your classes. You do math in p.e., geography in Spanish class, history in art class, science in music class, and every other combination imaginable. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand this, so why can't the policy makers and politicians?
